Parameters and testing
How to assess wood pellet quality
The key indicators are moisture, ash, calorific value, mechanical durability, sulfur and fines. Here is what the NordenPellet sample results mean.
Total moisture — 6.1%
Low moisture means less energy is spent evaporating water. The Eurofins-tested sample measured 6.1%.
Ash — 0.27%
Very low ash means little residue after combustion and may reduce appliance cleaning frequency. This result applies to the tested sample.
Net calorific value — 17.902 MJ/kg
The sample result equals approximately 4.97 kWh/kg, or 4.971 MWh per tonne. Eurofins also measured a gross calorific value of 19.337 MJ/kg.
Durability, density and fines
Mechanical durability was 98.4%, bulk density 640 kg/m³ and particles below 3.15 mm only 0.1%. These values describe granule strength and the amount of fines in the sample.
